Sony’s Portable Ultra Short Throw Projector, first shown at the IFA show in 2015, is breaking the conventional law that states: all projectors need to be oversized. The LSPX-P1 projector is perfect for someone wanting to a portable space-saving alternative to the traditional wall hanging flat screen. If apartment/condo space is an issue, Sony’s little projector may be the solution.

Small enough to hold in one hand, viewers have the option of projection images that range from 22 to 80 inches. Since it’s a short-throw, you can position Sony’s LSPX-P1 right next to the projector surface – whether that be a nearby wall or a piece of paper on your desk. With a diplsay resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, you avoid the telltale sign of poor image quality: visible pixels. Instead, feedback has been positive around the image quality, especially in dimly lit settings.
With its compact design and its high quality, premium finished materials, Sony’s LSPX seamlessly integrates into the home. In other words, it’s not an eyesore. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of watching a movie on a traditional projector, you’ve experienced long start up times and loud cooling fans. Thankfully, Sony’s short-throw was designed specifically to reduce fan noise and at the same time, the proximity sensor turns the projector on when it senses your smartphone nearby. It also turns it off when you’re out of range.
From streaming shows on Netflix to watching new releases on Blue-ray, Sony’s portable projector is a wireless unit that connects to your home’s Wi-Fi. If you’re the Magellan-type that travels for either work or leisure, the LSPX is small enough to tuck into a suitcase. If your hotel or Airbnb has Wi-Fi and a wall, floor or ceiling – you instantly have a mini-home entertainment system.
With two 0.98” Bass Reflex built-in speakers powered by xLoud technology, you’re able to turn up the volume without compromising sound quality. Since Sony’s built-in speakers are designed to pick up powerful low frequencies, connecting to a receiver for sound quality is not really necessary.
Finally, the Sony LSPX-P1 comes with a companion app allowing users to preset hologram-like images, such as current time, latest weather, and image galleries onto a nearby projection surface. The app also lets the user manage the smart controller whether it’s adjusting volume or switching between streaming devices.
Pros:
You can enjoy a display of 80 inches even is a very small space. The ultra-short throw also ensures you don’t have to worry about someone crossing in front of the projector or costly projector mounts.
Next best feature would be the wireless unit, this makes setup a breeze, you don’t have to spend a dime on costly HDMI cables or setup cost. By decoupling the projector display unit from the HDMI unit Sony has done an excellent job. You can keep the wireless unit near your Blu-Ray player or laptop and use the projector anywhere in your house. The wireless unit connects over Wi-Fi.
The inbuilt speaker packs a punch, the audio output crisp and clear. It completes the package.
Cons:
Screen brightness would the biggest deal breaker for this product, 100 lumens of brightness is very low for any kind of work. I have used this projector in various lighting conditions, in daylight, with window shades, evening time with room lights. The projected image is only enjoyable in total dark room. This limit the conditions in which we can use the projector.
Single HDMI port is a big downside, the wireless unit has a single HDMI port, given the n number choices other competing products offer this is very restrictive. Addition of USB-port would open a whole new-world of possibilities.
What really confused me is that the projector works on battery but the wireless unit doesn’t which means only your phone’s content can be viewed on battery power support, this seriously limits the portability. Support for file types of PowerPoint, word doc, excel sheet and pdf would be excellent.
Apart from these, the app needs to fix a few issues, like keystone correction guidelines is displayed for a very short period of time.
