At first glance, you would assume San Francisco-based Mission Bicycle engineered its Valencia single-speed and Sutro multi-speed bikes with a minimalistic approach. Upon further inspection, you will notice well-crafted, super-light, premium-quality bikes optimized for the city riding. Now the company is taking it one step further: Introducing Lyra – Mission Bicycle’s premium commuter bike equipped with integrated lighting and built-in GPS. Mission Bicycle wants to “help you fall in love with cycling by building the most personal, reliable, and remarkable city bicycle available.” I think they have accomplished their goal and they’ve done it with style.
Without a single (non-motorized) bicycle on the market offering integrated GPS technology, Mission Bicycle is about to corner the market with its theft deterring Lyra commuter. If there’s ever a concern about the whereabouts of your bike, simply pull up your iOS/Android compatible app, courtesy of Mission Bicycle, and instantly ping the location of your Lyra.
Engineered for safety, the Lyra comes with 100 integrated high brightness Light Emitting Diodes. Riders have the option of two modes (super bright and energy saver) for the front LED’s strategically housed inside the fork blades or three modes (continuous, flickering, wave) for the rear lights conveniently built around the seat post.
Mission offers two models outside of the Lyra: The Valencia and The Sutro. The single-speed Valencia keeps it simple with one gear eliminating any concern around shifting. This is perfect for riders with a straight shoot to work without any hills. If there’s a hill or two to contend with, then it’s time to lift off your seat and see what you’re made of – no need to hit the recumbent bike at the gym. The Valencia is lightweight (19 lbs) and has one fixed-wheel and one free-wheel.
The Sutro, on the other hand, has the “simplicity of single-speed riding with the convenience of multi-speed versatility.” Equipped with Mission Bicycle’s internally geared hub and a smooth shifter, Sutro is an 8-speed one-shifting street bike weighing 24 lbs. Sutro’s real magic: the internal gearing system which ensures a straight and static chain while shifting.
So this was Mission Bicycle’s strategy while building its bikes: strip everything down to an incredible lightweight, yet super strong 4130 Chromoly steel frame that is guaranteed for 50 years. From there, construct a compact street built around a straight blade fork, an integrated seat collar, and a short wheelbase.
Outside of the frame, which is impressive, all of the bike’s features have been carefully selected and “curated for quality.” If you’re a bike enthusiast, you’ll recognize the names of the state-of-the-art components that make up the Mission Bicycle. From the high-quality Brooke Leather saddle seat down to the ergonomic silicone grips, the Lyra, Valencia, and Sutro are all integrated with functional, yet durable features.
Whether it’s the super strong crankset, 7000 series aluminum seat post, Tektro caliper brakes, or the Continental Ultra Sport II puncture-resistant tires, this could be one of the most sophisticated street bikes under $1,000. Equipped with 5 red LED’s with over 100 hours of run time, the Mission Bicycle is the perfect balance between performance and safety.
Out of all of the components, Mission’s Shimano internally geared 8-speed derailleur really sets this commuter bike apart from the competition. Modeled after a 100-year old European gearing system, internal hubs have the following benefits for the rider:
1. The single shifter is intuitive and immediate
2. The gears are seals from weather and dirt
3. There are no vulnerable derailleurs to damage
4. There’s little to no maintenance
5. They can be tuned on the side of the road with a simple barrel twist
Mission Bicycle’s online buying experience empowers riders to personalize their street bike. Whether you want a single speed freewheel, a single-speed fixed, or an internal 8-speed bike, riders can tailor their buying decision around their environment. Available in over 200+ color choices, Mission’s street bikes captures the spirit of each rider.
I can not make an accurate review with just some pictures but I can say there is sure not the only bike with GLS as the report claims.
All the share bikes companies in CHINA offer a build in GPS system in all the bikes.
