Product is mediocre, google translator is by far better. As for the no WiFi requirement, google also has the same capability via a downloadable version. The Customer service for ili is also one of the worst I have ever experienced. They do not allow for any returns unless package is completely untouched. Save your money and go with google translator.

The translation quality is very poor. Unusable.
Unable to update software and Customer “Service” is non-existent. Had hoped it could help my colleagues who travel to Japan frequently for business but are nervous about traveling around alone due to language gap. Unfortunately not to be. Complete waste of money and iamili lost out on potential sales from one of the worlds largest electronics companies.

I like how the device is portable but when I place it in my bookbag it just starts talking on its own. Also, the device is kinda like programming one has to state all the directions, for example. One can’t say “I want a 4.5 shoe size.” instead one has to say “I want a 4.5 US shoe size.” For example, a way for the users to input our own translations. Another problem I have is that although you say something in English and it repeats it in English correctly the translated version is incorrect and very scattered. For those that don’t understand the language at all won’t know but for those who do it just seems really weird. Another thing that I dislike is the refund and return policy, where we can only return it if we never open it, But if we never open it, how are we suppose to try it and see if this item is worth the money. It is pretty expensive so one should be about to try it out first. What’s weird about the return policy is that it stated that when we refund it everything needs to be there or payment will be deducted but that means that you accept if the order was opened, so it doesn’t make any sense.

It worked so good! I tested with my Chinese and Japanese speaking friends, they were even surprised how accurate the translation was. (The voice is super cute but it works for me haha) I live in LA and tried on the street with the stranger who speak Spanish and IT WORKED TOO!!
Their customer support offers video chat program and it was face to face tutorial with their staff. They were super nice and very helpful, I love how this company is trying to make the customer happy! The translation could be improved and it is not the live translation yet, BUT for the offline translation I think this is good. I’m using this for my next trip to Mexico:)

Don’t buy this translator. It is just a toy, and the ili corporation won’t accept a return, once you open it. I simply wanted my money back, but all I got was dismissive stonewalling via email. They rushed this product out the door, before it was fully developed.

The translator worked beyond my expectation. Found it easy and convenient to use. I used it when I visited Japan. It was pretty convenient when I tell people what I want at restaurants (I can’t eat meat, Do you have a vegetarian menu), asking directions etc. The thing I loved the most was, Japanese people always smiled when I used the device. Great device. I love it.

When the battery life says 24 hours, note that’s whether or not you’re using the device. Don’t forget that micro SD recharging cord at night thinking you’re good to go because you only used it for a second or two. Thing is completely dead. Probably something they could fix.
Translation itself seems good. it picks up 90% of what I say and I dispute that the google offline version is ‘just as good’. In my experience Ili is a much better translator. Plus, the convenience of pushing one button vs. getting your phone out, starting up the app, holding it up like a tray and pointing to it so someone can listen closely is night and day different in a real-world situation.
