The Formula E Racing Circuit is home to The Global Championship of intelligence and technology and that means spotlighting Roborace DevBot self-driving vehicles. Saturday, February 18th marked the first time two high-tech autonomous electric racecars faced off against each other in Buenos Aires. The end result: two DevBots started the race and only one crossed the finish line.

Roborace DevBots

Robocar, the first driverless electric racing car, is the brainchild of Daniel Simon – a Hollywood Vehicle Concept Designer who’s most notable work can be seen in Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Captain America. The battle between DB1 and DB2 this past week is rather unprecedented. According to a recent New Atlas article, it marks the “first time two Roborace DevBots have been tested on the same track at the same time.”

Self-Driving Technology

After a nasty spinout, the showdown between the two DevBots ended with top lap speeds of 118 mph (186 km/hr) and only one DB1 being crowned the victor. One thing is for certain: the plan to race DevBots will certainly heat up especially alongside the Formula E Circuit that is gaining some much-deserved attention after Audi, BMW, Jaguar, and Mercedes-Benz have decided to throw their electric vehicle technology onto the track in 2018/19.

Formula E Circuit

Even though Spark Racing Technologies has been branded with the responsibility of manufacturing Formula E standard car bodies for its much anticipated 5th season, the DevBot racing prototypes are collecting valuable real-time data for the eventual RoboRace circuit. With the primary purpose of the DevBot races to “allow teams to develop their software and experience the hardware that will be used on the Robocar,” it certainly has garnered some serious attention from Formula E enthusiasts looking to get a sneak peak of the latest self-driving technology.

The Upcoming Mexico City Race

As the world’s first driverless electric racing car, Robocar is poised to revolutionize the already fascinating Formula E racing circuit. The DevBot racing circuit continues in Mexico City on the 1st of April. Even after a disappointing “incident on the track” for DevBot2, the competition will remain intense, as some of the most disruptive autonomous driving technology will once again be on display.
